Baan Thai

Chinatown in Las Vegas has many vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants. With both Veggie House and Chef Kenny’s serving up all-vegan fare, there are other spots in the neighborhood that are options if you’re looking for vegan options in Las Vegas. Enter Baan Thai.

Located just a couple of doors down from Veggie House, Baan Thai gives away its vegan friendliness immediately with a “Vegans Welcome” sign upon entry.

The vegan-friendly Thai restaurant launched their vegan menu thanks to customers requesting healthier options sans meat. So, a vegan menu was born.

Choose from appetizers such as Veggie Crispy Rolls, Tofu Satay accompanied by peanut sauce, or the Golden Spinach, fried in tempura. We went with the Vegetable Pot Stickers — yummy veggie dumplings that have been deep-fried.

What’s a Thai meal without Tom Kha? The Tom Kha Veggie is a spicy, coconut soup with lemongrass, mushroom, onions, and tomatoes. Don’t attempt to conquer this dish alone. Both the Tom Kha Veggie and the Tom Yum Veggie (clear broth) are served in a flaming pot, enough for four people.

The menu continues on with curries, a la carte Thai favorites, pan-fried noodles and fried rice. With so many options (to the tune of two full pages of vegan eats) it’s tough to make a decision.  Most of the dishes come with tofu, but for a little extra you can have soy chicken or beef instead.

We tried the Avocado Green Curry with fried tofu for a spicy bowl. With coconut milk, basil leaves, bell peppers, zucchini and bamboo shoots, we recommend soaking this curry up with a side of jasmine rice. And if you’re not a fan of spice, not a problem, just let your server know!

For a Baan Thai specialty, order the Four Seasons — a combo of sautéed carrots, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus and thinly sliced tofu covered in gravy. Or, if you want a little comfort food, the Orange Tofu is the way to go. The tofu is deep fried in batter before being covered in orange sauce. It’s sweet, heavy, and oh-so-good!

At the end of your meal, go ahead and satisfy your sweet tooth with the Mango Sticky Rice. *Please note that some of the vegan dessert options may be misprinted. Always check with your server if you have any questions.

Kathryn Hartwig is a senior writer for Vegans, Baby. She decided to go vegan nearly a decade ago while searching for the perfect diet to compliment her role as a professional dancer. After experimenting with multitudes of fads, she Kat found a lifestyle that turned out to be more than a diet. She settled in Vegas with her husband/photographer Daniel, and puppy, Layla, after traveling the world on cruise ships and living in New York City. The family recently welcomed the birth of their first child, a true vegan baby.
